How to Replace an audi spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges cost of audi key replacement the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and Audi Keyfob injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. The good news is they are very affordable and readily available, especially in the case of an Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of your audi keyfob's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating.
